Discord high ping is usually caused by a distant voice server, Wi-Fi spikes or a busy network. Click "Voice Connected" to see your ping and packet loss, change the voice channel's region override if you can, and fix your network the same way you would for games. If voices sound robotic, the problem is packet loss rather than ping.
How to check your Discord ping
- Join a voice channel.
- Click the green Voice Connected text at the bottom left.
- Discord shows your average ping, a graph and packet loss under the connection info.
| Ping | Voice quality |
|---|---|
| under 100 ms | Good |
| 100–200 ms | OK, small delays |
| 200+ ms | People talk over each other |
| Any packet loss | Robotic, choppy audio |
Why Discord ping gets high
- Distant voice region. Discord picks a voice server automatically, and sometimes it's far away from you or your friends.
- Wi-Fi spikes and interference.
- Other traffic — uploads, streams and downloads filling your connection.
- Bufferbloat in your router.
- Discord's QoS setting not working well with some routers.
How to fix Discord high ping
1. Change the voice region (region override)
Server admins can set a region for each voice channel:
- Hover over the voice channel and click the gear icon (Edit Channel).
- Open the Overview tab and find Region Override.
- Choose the region closest to most people in the call, instead of Automatic.
If you're not an admin, ask one, or create a test server to try different regions.
2. Toggle Quality of Service
In User Settings → Voice & Video, find Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority. It tells your router that voice packets are urgent. On most networks it helps, but some routers handle it badly. If your ping is high or unstable, try turning it off and compare.
3. Use a wired connection
Ethernet removes most of the spikes that make voice choppy. See Ethernet vs Wi-Fi.
4. Stop heavy uploads
Screen sharing, cloud backups and video uploads compete with voice for your upload bandwidth. Lower your Discord stream quality, or pause other uploads.
5. Fix bufferbloat
If Discord breaks up whenever someone else uses the internet, your router is queueing too much. Enable SQM. See what is bufferbloat.
6. Restart Discord and update it
Leaving and rejoining the channel often connects you to a different voice server. Keep the app updated.
7. Check your firewall and VPN
A VPN can route your voice traffic far away. Firewalls and antivirus software can interfere with UDP voice traffic. Try disconnecting the VPN and allowing Discord through the firewall.
Robotic voice = packet loss
If Discord shows packet loss, voices sound robotic or cut out. Fix the loss first:
- Switch to Ethernet.
- Restart the router.
- Follow how to fix packet loss.
Discord ping vs game ping
Discord's ping is to a Discord voice server, not to your game's server. High Discord ping with normal game ping usually means a bad voice region. If both are high, the problem is your connection. See why is my ping so high.
